Adi Kailash is located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. People who cannot undertake the Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra usually visit this Chota Kailash or Adi Kailash Yatra. You begin your journey from Dharchula, where pilgrims must obtain permits and a health certificate to embark on this journey. It is also the base of the Adi Kailash trek. You will pass through Gunji, Kuti Valley, and finally reach Jolingkong, where the Adi Kailash is located.
What to See in Adi Kailash Yatra
Parvati Tal: Also known as Gauri Kund, it is situated at the foot of the Adi Kailash Parvat. It is the pious lake, where Goddess Parvati meditated and acquired her son, Lord Ganesha. It is also known as the second-highest lake in the world.
Om Parvat: It is an ancient holy mountain at an altitude of 5570 metres above sea level. This mountain has a natural rock formation that resembles the divine symbol of “OM”. Pilgrims embarking on the Adi Kailash Yatra must visit this holy mountain.
Eligibility Criteria for Adi Kailash Yatra
Before planning your tour, you should know who can participate in the Adi Kailash Yatra. There are some criteria that the pilgrim must meet to get the permit to embark on this spiritual journey.
- The trekker should be a minimum of 7 years and a maximum of 70 years.
- Prior trekking experience with good fitness is preferred, but it is not mandatory. Inexperienced people with good stamina are also eligible.
- The trekker’s BMI should be under the normal range (18 to 29).
What Permit is Required?
To visit Adi Kailash, Indian travelers need to get an Inner Line Permit (ILP), which you get from the Sub Divisional Magistrate in Dharchula. This allows you to enter the restricted Indo-Nepal border, where the Adi Kailash Parvat is located.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Adi Kailash is during the summer season between April and June. The pleasant weather conditions and clear skies make it easier for you to embark on the Adi Kailash Yatra and explore the nearby attractions. Apart from this, the autumn season between September to October is also the best time to visit Adi Kailash.

- By Road: Delhi is approximately 650 km from Adi Kailash. You can enjoy a scenic journey from Delhi to reach Dharchula or Pithoragarh. You can come by bus or taxi. But from there, only a 4×4 vehicle can navigate the route to reach Adi Kailash finally. You can hire a cab or taxi from Dharchula or Pithoragarh to reach Adi Kailash, or you can trek from Dharchula.
- By Air: The nearest airport to Adi Kailash is Pantnagar. You get flights from Delhi and other major cities in India to Pantnagar. From there, book a taxi or cab to reach Pithoragarh/Dharchula and start your trek, or directly reach the Adi Kailash Mountain.
- By Train: The nearest railway stations are Kathgodam and Tanakpur. From there, you will have to book a taxi or cab to reach Adi Kailash. Remember, only local transportation is an option in the Adi Kailash region.
