Kedarnath and Badrinath
Kedarnath and Badrinath are the revered Hindu Temples in the Himalayas. These are the two destinations of the famous Char Dham Yatra and known as Do Dham. Devotees with time constraints and limited physical abilities usually undertake the Do Dham Yatra.
Kedarnath: Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in the Garhwal Himalayan range. It is one of the sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of lord Shiva in India and is believed to have been built by the Pandav brothers. It is situated at a high altitude of 3,583 metres above sea level. This temple houses a unique Lingam of Shiva, which resembles the hump of a bullock. Devotees visit this shrine every year from all over India. Kedarnath Temple opens every year in the month of May, and it remains open till the second day of Diwali, that is, Bhaidooj, due to extreme weather conditions.
Badrinath: Badrinath Temple is also one of the parts of the Bada Char Dham Yatra and is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu, where you can see his idol made in black stone in the form of Badrinarayan. It is believed to be a self-manifested idol (Swayambhu) of lord Vishnu. Badrinath Temple is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters above sea level and is located on the banks of the River Alaknanda.
Yamunotri and Gangotri
Another Do Dham Yatra that pilgrims undertake is the Yamunotri and Gangotri. These two are the sacred rivers in India that are worshipped as the Goddess Yamuna and the Goddess Ganga.
Yamunotri: Yamunotri is situated at an altitude of 3,235 metres above sea level in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand state. It is the place from where the River Yamuna originates. There is a temple dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna. Devotees visit the temple to bow down and worship Yamuna Mata. You will see a black stone idol of Goddess Yamuna in the sanctum of the temple. Every year, the idol is shifted to another temple when the portal of the temple closes. The idol is shifted again to the main temple in Akshaya Tritiya when the door of the temple opens.
Gangotri: Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganga, the longest and most sacred river in India. Gaumukh is a glacier, which is the main origin of the River Ganga, called Bhagirathi. It is located approximately 19 km away from the main Gangotri Temple. It is situated 11,200 feet above sea level in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. You will see the idol of Goddess Ganga in the temple along with other goddesses, like Maa Saraswati, Laxmi, and Annapurna.
