Where is Mount Kailash Located?

It is located approximately. 538 km northwest of Kathmandu, Nepal. And, around 145 km northeast of the border of India. With a massive height of 22000 feet, Mount Kailash is a sacred pilgrimage site for four different religions: Hindu, Jain, Bon Po, and Buddhism. During the Mt Kailash Parikrama (Kora), devotees have darshan of the peak’s four faces —South, North, East, and West.

  • Darchen: It is a small and quaint town in Tibet, China, situated at the foot of Mount Kailash. It serves as the starting point to Mount Kailash Kora, the sacred circumambulation. Not only the starting point, but it is also the hub for pilgrims and trekkers to gather their supplies and essentials. Along with lodging and permits, the medical support for pilgrims is also found here.
  • Gauri Kund: This is a sacred pool, which is believed to be associated with Goddess Parvati. It is the lake where she used to bathe, and once she acquired her son, Lord Ganesha. Therefore, this is also known as Parvati Sarovar and is located just below the Dalma La Pass.

When to Visit Mount Kailash

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra does not remain open throughout the year due to extreme weather conditions. Hence, this Yatra takes place only during the summer season, especially from May to September, due to the pleasant weather conditions. So, you can plan your Yatra during this time. How to Reach

The best route to reach Mount Kailash is through the route that the MEA, the government of India, organizes. You will go through either Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand or Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. However, these routes can take 20+ days to complete the journey.

  • Nathu La Pass (Sikkim): This route includes vehicle transport.

The nearest airport is Kathmandu Airport. From there, you can get a bus and reach the Nepal-China town of Rasuwagadhi/Syabrubesi. From there, continue your journey to Kyirong (Gyirong) in Tibet. Further travel to Saga and Mansarovar Lake. Finally reach Mount Kailash.
