About Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour

In search of the answers to the problems and sufferings, Gautam Buddha left his home and family at the early age of 29. He went to different places and meditated underneath a tree, presently called the Bodhi Tree. After seven days, he became enlightened. He wanted to speak about his realisation but was very hesitant. Then one day, he met his five companions, who had left him, and taught them about his enlightenment. This is the first time Gautam Buddha preached his sermon in Sarnath near Varanasi. Further, this enlightenment was established in India and neighboring countries—Nepal, Bhutan, and China, and took an essential form as Buddhism in the whole world. Today, Gautam Buddha is known as the Lord Buddha, the one who has attained the state of Nirvana.

Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour is the exploration of these enlightenments, which are now placed in the form of Stupas and Monasteries in different places. During your Buddhist Circuit Tour, you cover all the major Buddhism-affiliated locations. Footloose Holidays provides a wide range of Buddhist Circuit Tour Packages, which you can customize to your preferences, time, and pace.

  • Lumbini, Nepal: It is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. He spent his childhood days as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini, located in Nepal in the Rupandehi district.
  • Shravasti: It is an ancient kingdom and was one of the six largest cities in Gautam Buddha’s time. Today, Gautam Buddha spent most time in this place and showed many miracles.
  • Bodh Gaya: This encompasses the main pilgrimage sites of Buddhism, like temples, meditation sites, and cultural attractions, especially the Bodhi Tree, where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment.
  • Sarnath: Located near the popular pilgrimage destination, Varanasi, Sarnath is the site where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.
  • Khushinagar: It is one of the most sacred places of lord Buddha. He attained Mahaparinirvana (final nirvana) or salvation at this place. He was cremated in Rambhar Stupa.
  • Rajgir: In Gautam Buddha’s lifetime, Rajgir was the capital of the Magadha Kingdom. He spent a significant time here teaching and giving sermons to his disciples.
  • Nalanda: Although Lord Buddha himself did not establish the university, it is the first residential international university of the world. It was founded in the fifth century and was the seat of learning, where more than 10000 students lived and studied. Today, the ruins of the Nalanda University can be seen in the Indian state of Bihar.
  • Vaishali: One of the revered sites for Buddhist followers, as it is believed that during his life, Gautam Buddha visited Vaishali several times. It is the place where he preached his last sermon and announced his approaching nirvana. This is also associated with one of lord Buddha’s closest disciples, Ananda.
