List of 12 Jyotirlingas in India: Sacred Shiva Temples

Somnath: Located in Prabhas Patan, Gujarat, Somnath Temple is the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple has been attacked 17 times, and every time it is reconstructed. The current construction of the temple is in the Chaulukya Style of Hindu.

Mallikarjuna: Situated on the banks of the Krishna River in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh, Mallikarjuna Temple is the oldest religious site in the state.

Mahakaleshwar: Located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the revered and most visited Jyotirlingas in India. It is known for its unique tantric rituals. The Bhasma Aarti in the sanctum every day is the main highlight of the Mahakaleshwar Darshan.

Omkareshwar: Another Jyotirlinga in the Madhya Pradesh state, near the Mahakaleshwar Temple, is Omkareshwar. Situated on an island on the banks of the Narmada River, Omkareshwar Temple is a revered shrine of Lord Shiva.

Kedarnath: Nestled in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is a highly revered shrine. Every year, pilgrims embark on the spiritual pilgrimage to Kedarnath Dham, which opens from April/May and closes two days after Diwali.

Bhimashankar: Located near Pune, Maharashtra, associated with the Bhima River.

Kashi Vishwanath: Situated in the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most revered pilgrimage destination in India. The temple is situated on the banks of the River Ganga, where pilgrims take a holy dip and perform puja rituals before having the darshan of Kashi Vishwanath.

Trimbakeshwar: Near Nashik, Maharashtra, known for its three-faced Shiva lingam, embodying Tridev—Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

Baidyanath: Baba Baidyanath Temple is located in Deoghar city of the Jharkhand state. The complex of the temple comprises 22 temples, with the largest temple of Baba Baidyanath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. What makes this shrine even more sacred for pilgrims is the Shakti Peeth near Baidyanath Temple. It is the place where the heart of Goddess Sati had fallen.

Nageshwar: One of the famous Jyotirlinga shrines in Gujarat is the Nageshwar Temple. Located just 16 km from Dwarka, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the revered temples in Gujarat.  The 25-metre-tall statue of lord Shiva is the centre of attraction.

Rameshwaram: Another Jyotirlinga Temple in South India is Rameshwaram, located in Tamil Nadu. It is associated with the epic Ramayana.

Grishneshwar: Located near Ellora Caves, Maharashtra, Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is the 12th and the final Jyotirlinga of India. Although it is the smallest of all the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, it holds a special place in the hearts of devotees.
